Glass & Mirror Cutting in Rochester, NY

Bring in a measurement, or the broken piece itself, and we'll cut a replacement at the counter while you wait. On most glass, the cutting is no extra charge. You pay for the material.

We stock window glass, mirror, non-glare picture frame glass, obscure privacy glass, jalousie glass, plexiglass and polycarbonate at all three Rochester-area stores, in a wide range of stock sizes. Anything we don't have on the shelf, our custom sourcing team can usually get within a couple of business days.

Common jobs: a cracked window pane, glass for a picture frame, a shelf that isn't a standard size, a tabletop protector, a cabinet door insert, a storm door panel, a medicine cabinet shelf.

Glass Cut to Size While You Wait

Which thickness you need usually comes down to the size of the opening and how much abuse the piece will take.

We keep boxed glass in stock from small frame sizes up to full sheets. If the size you need isn't one of them, we cut it from a sheet, and if it's outside what we carry, our custom sourcing team can get it.

Mirror Cut to Size

We stock mirror in double strength and cut it to your dimensions for closet doors, bathroom vanities, dresser tops, workout rooms and craft projects. Bring the old mirror if it came out in one piece, or bring the frame it needs to sit in.

For a beveled edge, a polished edge, a shape that isn't a rectangle, or a specialty finish, our custom sourcing team can order it. See below.

Picture Frame Glass

Standard frame glass reflects roughly eight percent of the light that hits it, which is why a photo hung across from a window can be hard to look at.

• Non-glare glass. In stock. Etched to scatter reflected light, and the usual pick for framed portraits and art. Single strength, so it stays light in the frame.
• Clear single strength. In stock. Fine for most everyday frames.
• Museum Glass and other conservation glazing. Ordered through our custom sourcing team, usually in hand within a couple of business days. An anti-reflective coating drops reflection below one percent and the UV coating slows fading. Worth it for original art, signed prints, textiles and anything you don't plan to reframe.

Obscure Glass for Privacy Windows

Obscure glass passes light but breaks up the view, which makes it the standard choice for bathroom windows, entry sidelights, basement windows and interior doors. We stock it in double strength and cut it to size.

Jalousie Glass for Louvered Windows

If you have a jalousie window, a louvered door or an older medicine cabinet, the individual glass slats are a specific item and most stores don't carry them. We do, in 1/4" clear with the long edges already polished, which is what makes them safe to handle in a louver clip. We cut them to your length.

This is a common job on older Rochester homes and on three-season porches.

Plexiglass, Lexan and Polycarbonate

For anywhere glass is a bad idea. A basement window, a garage door panel, a kid's room, a machine guard, a sign face.

Acrylic is clearer and cheaper. Polycarbonate costs more and scratches more easily, but it takes an impact that would shatter acrylic. If you're replacing a pane that has already been broken once, polycarbonate is usually the answer.

Window Glass and Storm Door Glass

Single strength handles most residential window panes. Double strength is the better call for storm doors, larger openings and anything at ground level where a stray ball or a shovel might find it.

If the sash itself is damaged, or the window is a sealed thermal pane that has fogged between the layers, that's a repair shop job rather than a counter cut. See window glass repair.

Tempered, Specialty Shapes and Special Orders

Tempering heats the glass and cools it fast, which puts the outer surface under permanent compression. That's what makes it strong and what makes it crumble into pebbles instead of shards. The stress is locked in, so scoring a tempered panel afterward brings the whole thing apart at once. Tempered glass has to be ordered at final size.

Bring us the measurements, or a template for an odd shape, and we'll price it out. Most specialty glass is in within a couple of business days, so a special order rarely means a long wait. Specialty cuts and finishing work carry a fee, unlike standard cutting.

Not sure whether the piece you're replacing is tempered? Look for a small etched stamp in one corner, or bring it in and we'll tell you.

How to Measure

1. Measure the opening at both ends and in the middle. Old openings are rarely square, so use the smallest number.
2. Measure width first, then height, and write down which is which.
3. Subtract about 1/8" from each dimension so the piece drops in without binding.
4. For a frame or a sash with a rabbet, measure the recess, not the outside of the frame.

Easier still, bring the old piece. If it broke into more than a few chunks, bring the frame.
