Propane Refill & Exchange

Running out of propane mid-cookout is a familiar frustration for anyone with a gas grill, patio heater, or camper in the Rochester area. As a neighborhood hardware store with three locations, Weiders can refill your propane tank or set you up with a full one, but exactly how that works depends on which of our three locations you visit. Each store handles propane a little differently, so it's worth knowing the details for your nearest location before you head over.

Propane Service by Location

LocationHow It Works
Weiders Brighton (1800 Monroe Ave)Drop off your empty tank and we'll have it refilled with one-day turnaround. Ask in-store about checking whether your tank is expired.
Weiders Honeoye Falls (166 W Main St)We refill tanks on-site while you wait. We also fill motor-home propane tanks.
Weiders Perinton (585 Moseley Rd)We run the Blue Rhino propane exchange program: swap your empty 20 lb tank for a full one on the spot (your tank must be eligible for exchange).

Refill or Exchange: Which Makes Sense?

  • Refill typically gets you more propane for your money, since tanks are filled by weight rather than swapped as a flat unit, and you keep the same tank you're used to handling.
  • Exchange is fast and convenient when you don't want to wait, though the tank you take home may not be the same one you dropped off.
  • Motor-home tanks need on-site refilling rather than exchange, since they're built into the vehicle. Honeoye Falls handles this.
  • If you're not sure which option fits your situation, ask any of our locations; our helpful staff can point you to the right one.

A Note on Tank Age

Propane tanks don't last forever. Every cylinder is required to be requalified every 12 years from its original manufacture date, or every 5 years after its first requalification. The date is stamped on the collar near the valve, so it's easy to check before you leave home. An expired tank can't be refilled or exchanged until it's requalified, which is one more reason to check before making a special trip, particularly at our Brighton location where staff can help you confirm your tank's status.

Planning Ahead

Propane season in the Rochester area tends to follow the grill and the thermostat. Demand climbs in spring and summer for grilling and patio heaters, and again in fall as homeowners fire up patio heaters and campers get winterized or opened back up. Keeping a spare tank on hand, or knowing which of our three locations fits your routine, saves a trip when you're already hungry and the grill is cold.

Beyond the tank itself, our Grilling department carries everything from replacement grates and igniters to the grills themselves, and our Outdoor Equipment department can help outfit campers, patio heaters, and other propane-powered gear. Whichever Weiders location is closest to you, stop in and we'll get you squared away, whether that means a same-day refill, a quick swap, or just help figuring out which service fits your tank.

This service isn't available at every store — call ahead or check which location offers it before you stop in.

Why Weiders

Refill, Exchange, or Motor-Home Fill

The right option depends on which store you visit — we make it easy to check ahead so you're not turned away.

Refilling Costs Less Than Exchange-Only

Where refilling is available, it's typically more affordable and gives you more propane per tank than a straight swap.

Never Stuck Mid-Cookout

Keeping a spare tank in rotation between refills means you're not caught empty-handed on grilling day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which store should I go to for propane?

It depends what you need: Brighton refills tanks with one-day turnaround, Honeoye Falls fills on-site while you wait (including motor-home tanks), and Perinton runs the Blue Rhino exchange program. Call ahead to confirm before you go.

Can you tell me if my tank is expired?

Ask in-store at Brighton — they can check whether your tank is still eligible for refill before you leave it.

Do you fill motor-home propane tanks?

Yes, at our Honeoye Falls location specifically.

How can I tell if my propane tank has expired?

Propane tanks must be requalified every 12 years from their manufacture date (or every 5 years after their first requalification) — the date is stamped on the collar near the valve. Ask in-store if you're not sure how to read it.
