Locksmith / Security Hardware Technician

Associate LevelFull-TimePerinton

Run the key counter and take service calls for rekeys, lock installs, and lockouts — the jobs where customers need someone they can trust.

Posted/Updated August 11, 2026

Weiders Hardware is hiring an experienced locksmith to run our in-store key and lock counter and handle service calls at customer homes and businesses. You'll work independently in the field — rekeying, installing hardware, and getting people back into their own property — and you'll be the person customers trust with access to their homes. Discretion and a steady, professional manner matter here as much as technical skill.

Responsibilities

  • Rekey and repin residential and commercial cylinders; originate and duplicate keys, including transponder and high-security blanks.
  • Install and service door hardware: deadbolts, mortise locks, levers, closers, panic/exit devices, and electronic and smart locks (keypad, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi).
  • Perform lockouts and non-destructive entry for verified customers, and lock changes for new homeowners and tenants.
  • Set up and maintain master key systems for commercial accounts; keep accurate, secure key records.
  • Verify proof of ownership or authorization before any entry or rekey work — no exceptions.
  • Run the in-store key counter, advise walk-in customers on hardware selection, and support inventory ordering.
  • Diagnose failed or damaged locks and give the customer an honest repair-versus-replace recommendation with a clear price.
  • Assess commercial jobs for code compliance (fire egress, ADA) and flag anything requiring a licensed contractor.
  • Document each job with notes, photos, and time for accurate invoicing.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours lockouts, if we offer that service.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on locksmithing, or completion of a locksmith program plus verifiable field experience.
  • Own truck or van in reliable, presentable condition, plus a complete set of locksmith tools (picks, plug followers, key machine access, drill kit).
  • Valid NYS driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Clean criminal background check — non-negotiable given the nature of the work.
  • Sound judgment about authorization and customer identity; understands the liability of getting it wrong.
  • Comfortable with electronic access control and smart lock troubleshooting, or willing to train up quickly.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs, work from ladders, and stay on your feet through a full shift.
  • Smartphone use for dispatch, photos, and job records.
  • Preferred: ALOA membership or certification (CRL, CPL), automotive key programming experience, commercial master keying experience.
