What's Wrong With My Snow Blower?

Most snow blower trouble shows up as one of a few symptoms. The table below lists what usually causes each one. A technician confirms the cause during diagnosis and quotes the repair before any work starts.

SymptomUsual cause
Won't start after sitting all summerStale gas that gummed up the carburetor, a fouled spark plug, or a bad recoil
Starts, then surges or only runs on chokeVarnish in the carburetor from old fuel
Engine runs but the auger won't turnA broken shear pin, or a worn or slipped auger belt
Throws snow a shorter distance than it used toWorn auger paddles, a worn belt, or packed snow and ice in the impeller housing
Two-stage won't pull itself forwardA worn drive belt or worn drive parts
Chute won't turnA seized or stretched chute control cable
Electric start does nothingThe starter, the cord or the switch
Battery machine dies fast or won't power onThe battery pack, the charger or the machine. We test all three separately.

Shear pins are made to break when the auger hits a rock, a frozen newspaper or a chunk of plow ridge, which protects the gearbox. Replace a broken one with a proper shear pin, never an ordinary bolt. Keep a few spares in the garage. We stock shear pins, belts and scraper bars in our outdoor equipment department, and the model number gets you the right ones.

If you'd rather try a few checks yourself first, our snow blower winter-ready guide walks through a 10-minute start test and five fixes for a machine that won't start.

Single-Stage, Two-Stage and Battery Snow Blowers

A single-stage snow blower uses one rubber-edged auger to pick up snow and throw it out the chute. It's light and clears down to the pavement. The auger paddles and the scraper bar wear with use, so check both every fall.

A two-stage machine adds an impeller behind a steel auger, a self-propelled drive, and more belts, cables and shear pins. It handles heavy, wet snow and the plow ridge at the end of the driveway, and it has more parts to look after. Two-stage machines are also the ones that don't fit in a car, which is why pickup matters most for them.

Battery snow blowers have no oil, spark plug or carburetor. On those we test the battery, the charger and the machine separately, so you're not buying a new battery to fix a smaller problem.

Snow Blower Tune-Up, Pickup and Delivery Included

Snow blower tune-ups start at $199.99, with no diagnostic charge. Every tune-up includes pickup and delivery of your machine.

A tune-up covers:

  • Fresh oil
  • A new spark plug
  • A cleaned fuel system
  • An inspection of the belts, shear pins, auger and scraper bar
  • A full safety check of the controls and shutoffs

On battery machines we test pack health and charge cycles instead of doing the fuel and ignition work.

Tune-up pricing is for machines that start and run. If yours won't start, it needs a $35 diagnosis first, and we quote parts and labor before doing anything else.

When to Bring a Snow Blower In

The National Weather Service has tracked Rochester's first snowfall since 1884. The first measurable snow arrives around November 8 on average, and the first full inch around November 20. Our standard turnaround is about two weeks for gas machines, so a snow blower dropped off by the end of October or the first days of November is usually back before the first real accumulation.

September and October are the best months. Every year the first real snow fills our benches, and a machine that comes in during a storm week waits behind everything else that came in that morning.

Repair or Replace?

If the machine is ten or more years old with major problems, or the repair quote runs more than about half the price of a new one, replacement usually makes more sense. Ask the technician when you get the quote.

If you're replacing, our outdoor equipment department carries EGO battery single-stage and two-stage models and Toro snow blowers. Floor stock thins out fast after the first heavy storm, so call ahead for a specific model.

Toro, EGO, Ariens and Other Brands

  • Toro. We repair Toro snow blowers as a paid service. Our Toro warranty repair certification is in progress, so call before drop-off if you expect warranty coverage.
  • EGO. We're an EGO Authorized Dealer and Service Center and repair EGO battery snow blowers under warranty.
  • Briggs & Stratton. We're certified for warranty work on Briggs & Stratton engines.
  • Ariens, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Honda, Husqvarna and the rest. Paid repair on any brand we can get parts for. Call the store nearest you if you're not sure about yours.

For any warranty claim, bring your registration or proof of purchase.

Cost and Turnaround

Diagnosis on a repair is $35, paid when you check the machine in. Tune-ups have no diagnostic charge. If the repair goes through as a warranty claim, the manufacturer covers the fee and you get the $35 back. If it isn't a warranty repair, the $35 isn't refunded and is billed in addition to the repair.

Standard turnaround is about two weeks for gas machines and about three weeks for battery machines, once diagnosis is done and you've approved the plan. Warranty parts availability can push that out, and the first big storm of the year always does.

How it works:

  1. Call or drop off. Call your nearest store to book a tune-up with pickup, or bring the snow blower to any Weider's location.
  2. Diagnosis. A technician finds the problem and quotes the repair, or orders parts for warranty work.
  3. Repair. We start once you approve.
  4. Return. We call you when it's ready. Tune-ups come back to your door. For other repairs, ask about pickup and delivery to your address.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a snow blower tune-up?

Snow blower tune-ups start at $199.99, with no diagnostic charge, and include pickup and delivery of your machine. A tune-up covers fresh oil, a new spark plug, a cleaned fuel system, an inspection of the belts, shear pins, auger and scraper bar, and a full safety check.

How much does snow blower repair cost?

Diagnosis is $35, paid at check-in. A technician then quotes the repair before any work starts. If the repair is covered by warranty, the manufacturer covers the diagnosis and you get the $35 back.

Do you pick up snow blowers for repair?

Yes. Pickup and delivery is included with every snow blower tune-up: we collect the machine, service it in our shop and bring it back. For other repairs, call the store nearest you for a pickup quote to your address.

How long does snow blower repair take?

About two weeks for gas machines and about three weeks for battery machines, once diagnosis is complete and you've approved the repair. The first big storm of the season fills our benches, so September and October are the best time to bring it in.

Why won't my snow blower start?

The most common cause is stale fuel left in the tank over the summer, which gums up the carburetor. A fouled plug, a bad recoil or an electric start fault are next. Bring it in and we'll diagnose it for $35.

Why does my snow blower run but not throw snow?

Usually a broken shear pin or a worn or slipped auger belt. If it throws snow but not as far as it used to, the auger paddles or belt may be worn, or the impeller housing may be packed with ice. Shut the engine off before checking anything near the auger or chute.

When should I get my snow blower serviced?

September or October. Rochester's first measurable snow arrives around November 8 on average, and with about two weeks' turnaround on gas machines, a snow blower dropped off by early November is usually back in time.

Do you repair Ariens snow blowers?

Yes, as a paid repair. We also repair Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Honda, Husqvarna and any other brand we can get parts for, whether or not you bought it from us.

Do you repair Toro snow blowers?

Yes, as a paid repair. Our Toro warranty repair certification is in progress, so call before drop-off if you expect warranty coverage.

Do you repair EGO battery snow blowers?

Yes. We're an EGO Authorized Dealer and Service Center and repair EGO snow blowers under warranty, testing the battery, charger and machine separately.

Should I repair or replace an old snow blower?

If it's ten or more years old with major problems, or the repair quote is more than about half the price of a new one, replacement usually makes more sense. We carry EGO and Toro snow blowers if you decide to replace it.

Where can I get a snow blower repaired near Rochester?

At any of our three stores: Brighton (1800 Monroe Ave), Fairport/Perinton (585 Moseley Rd) or Honeoye Falls (166 W Main St). Call the store nearest you to book a tune-up with pickup and delivery.
